Lead Android Engineer

Lead the Unloc app on Android and Wear OS: the phone in people’s pockets that opens their doors, across lock systems from many vendors.

  • Oslo
  • Full-time
  • Hybrid

Every day, residents, tenants, employees and contractors open their doors with the Unloc app. It talks to locks over Bluetooth and NFC, keeps working when the signal drops, and puts 20+ access systems behind one simple tap. You’ll own how that feels on Android.

This is a hands-on lead role. You’ll set the direction for our Android and Wear OS apps, write a large share of the code yourself and raise the bar for everyone who touches it. You’ll work closely with the rest of product and engineering, and with the customers and partners who put Unloc in front of hundreds of thousands of people.

The app and the stack

The Unloc app runs on Android, Wear OS and iOS, and opens more than 2 million doors a month in homes, offices and public buildings in Norway and the UK. On Android we build with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, and talk to locks over BLE and NFC. Behind the app is the Unloc platform and its public API, connected to 20+ access systems.

What you will do

  • Own the Android and Wear OS apps end to end: architecture, quality, releases and the roadmap, together with product.
  • Make opening a door instant and dependable: BLE and NFC communication, background behaviour, battery life and the quirks of thousands of Android devices.
  • Build offline access that keeps working in basements and stairwells with no signal, and stays secure when it does.
  • Bring new lock vendors and access systems into one consistent experience, so nobody needs to know which brand is on the door.
  • Set up what lets a small team ship often: tests, CI, crash and performance monitoring, staged rollouts.
  • Help hire and mentor as the team grows.

What you will bring

  • You’ve shipped and maintained Android apps that people depend on every day, and you can explain the choices you made along the way.
  • Deep Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, coroutines and modern Android architecture.
  • Experience with Bluetooth Low Energy, NFC or other hardware communication on Android, including how it behaves across manufacturers. Wear OS experience is a plus.
  • A security mindset: you care about how credentials are stored, signed, synced and revoked.
  • You lead by example in code review and design, and can explain technical trade-offs to people who aren’t engineers.

Haven’t had a lead title yet? If you’re the person your team already goes to for Android, we’d still like to hear from you.

Coding agents

We expect you to build with coding agents such as Claude Code. In the interview, you’ll show how you scope a task, give an agent the right context, review what it writes and test the result on a real device. Be ready to explain where an agent went wrong and how you caught it, especially in code that talks to hardware.

What to show us

Tell us about an Android app you built or led. Who used it, which parts did you build, and what was hardest to get right? If you’ve worked with BLE, NFC or other hardware, tell us about it, and how you used coding agents. A short written explanation is enough. Links to apps or code are welcome too.

Help build the challenger.

Keys, fobs and cards made buildings depend on someone being there. Unloc replaces them with access decided by data, on the locks buildings already have, for residents, tenants, employees and contractors.

Owners and operators of 400,000+ homes and workplaces already use Unloc, and the app opens more than 2 million doors a month. You’ll work directly with our founder, own a meaningful part of what comes next, and have colleagues in Oslo and London to draw on.
